Did you know that most “travel insurance” offered by credit cards and banks (often as bolt-ons to accounts) are not as comprehensive as specialist travel insurance? If you are intending to rely on one of these policies, do, please, read your policy very carefully to ensure that you are covered for all the areas you require.

Always take out travel insurance immediately you book your holiday so that you are covered if you have to cancel. You do not, however, need to take the insurance your travel agent or airline offers you.

Do consider where your priorities lie. Some insurance companies offer surprisingly cheap insurance that might, for example, offer medical cover half that of TGIS below. This might be perfectly suitable for holidays in the European Community where your health card offers protection, but you might feel that it is inadequate for the USA  where a medical emergency can literally cost millions of dollars.
